Our history…..
Middleburg Baptist Church was founded November 27, 1881. Eight disciples of the Baptist faith sought to establish a church in the village of Middleburg. The church originally met in an old sawmill. Rev. M.V. McDuffy led the charter members in the organization of the new church. Services were held on the third Sunday of each month and moved in later years to the second Sunday of each month. Through the years, many pastors have come and gone. Several shared services with other area churches and we even began a tradition of having student pastors. Since 1941, we have had mostly full time pastors.
In 1906, Dr. Cullom assisted with the erection of a baptistry. During 1945-1948, a glass floor furnace and gas heaters replaced the two wood burning stoves. In 1950, the Sunday school wing was completed. In 1951, a Communion table, two chairs and a flower stand were given by the Women’s Missionary Society. These pieces remain in the sanctuary today. New pews were purchased by members and installed in October 1952. During 1956-1958, the parsonage was completed. Rev. Don Niswonger and his wife were the first to live in the new home. Memorial plaques were installed on the pews in 1966. On September 20, 1972, the sanctuary stained glass windows were installed. Each window depicts a Biblical scene from the life of Jesus. In June 1974, a new heating and air conditioning system was installed in the sanctuary. This was the first time any portion of the church was air-conditioned. In October 1981, we celebrated 100 years of serving the Lord with a Centennial Service and luncheon. During 1983-1984, the men of the church remodeled the fellowship hall (now the kitchen) with paneling, cabinets, sink, stove, and refrigerator. In 2001, the beautiful lighted steeple was added as a beacon to the community. It can be seen across the town and from nearby Interstate Highway 85. In 2006, the Fellowship Hall was completed and dedicated. In 2011, the Margaret “Lucy” Mayberry Prayer Garden was added on the grounds. In 2012, our current pastor, James Parker, came to be our pastor. A beautiful enclosed playground was added in 2014.
Today we offer services every Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. The church is not the brick, the mortar or the buiding, the church is the people. Over the last 144 years, many of God’s people have passed through these doors. Once you enter, you leave as family.
